On March 31, 2004 Deputy VanKuren and Deputy Burgert were attempting to locate and arrest a subject on a warrant in Wells Township when they where tragically gunned down.  Mike is survived by his wife Elane, and children Andrew and Tiffani.  Chris is survived by his wife Kim, and son Christian. 
     In May 2005 Mike and Chris were honored in Washington D.C. when their names were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, and they were specifically mentioned in a speech given by President George W. Bush.
